Bill Kurz began his career as an athlete at QND in 1956. He started out on the varsity basketball team his freshman year but missed the regional tournament with a broken collarbone.
In 1957, his sophomore year, the Raiders finished 4th in the state. Kurz was a second team All-Tournament selection at the state tourney.
He continued his fine play his junior year being selected his team's MVP, first team All-State by the News Gazette, first team All-State and All-Southern by the Chicago Daily News, and was a Catholic All-American. His senior year he was again the team MVP, MVP of the Macomb Holiday Tourney, first team All-State News Gazette, first team All-State and All-Southern teams by the Chicago Daily News and was Catholic All-American for the second straight year. He was also a starter on the QND golf team during his junior and senior years.
Kurz scored 2,110 career points and is still 63rd on the Illinois all-time career scorers. He was captain his senior year, and he was vice president of his senior class. Kurz went to Notre Dame University on a basketball scholarship but transferred to St. Louis University after his freshman year. He was a 3 year starter at St. Louis University.
Kurz was one of the early players to set the standards for successful basketball at QND for many years. We welcome him and congratulate him as he enters the QND Hall of Fame.
