Seeking Donors for Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program

Last year Illinois enacted the Invest in Kids Act, creating a tax credit scholarship program. The program allows individuals and corporations to donate to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) and receive a credit on their state taxes in return. SGOs are then responsible for granting scholarships to qualifying students. The Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools and Quincy Notre Dame High School work with the SGO, Empower Illinois,

In the inaugural year, we have seen an overwhelming need for scholarships from Illinois’ low-income and working-class families. More than 230 Quincy area students have applied for a scholarship through Empower Illinois but current funding levels have only provided scholarships for 43 students to-date in our area.

How can you help? Donors who give to Empower Illinois receive a 75% tax credit for the amount of their gift, up to $1 million. In addition, any portion of the tax credit may be carried forward for up to five years. For example, if an individual usually donates $2,500, they can donate $10,000 and could get 75% of their donation back (depending on their tax liability) and the school receives an extra $7,500.

Individual donors can designate their donation to a particular school. We ask benefactors who are interested in participating in the tax credit program to consider directing donations to Blessed Sacrament, St. Dominic, St. Francis, St. Peter and/or QND. We strongly recommend that individuals speak with their tax advisor regarding the implications and advantages of the tax credits.

This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of a tax credit while making a difference in the lives of QCES and QND students who qualify for this scholarship. CLICK HERE to see detailed information about how the program works.
