Inducted 2014. The head coach had left the school, and two players who went on to play professional soccer had graduated. It would have been understandable to think that the success of the 1985 state championship soccer team would be impossible to duplicate. Well, the 1986 team nearly pulled it off.
The Raiders outscored their opponents during the regular season by a combined score of 52-15. QND went 15-2-3 during the regular season, with two of those victories being 2-0 decisions over cross-town rival Quincy High School. The Raiders thumped Pekin 10-0 and Peoria Spalding in regional play, then used two goals by Mike Drew to give QHS another 2-0 loss in the regional title game.
QND’s state tournament run nearly came to a premature end in the opening round of the sectional. The Raiders allowed a goal to Normal University High with 20 seconds left in regulation play that tied the score, then needed Chris Mackenzie’s goal with 26 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime to win 2-1. Coach Frank Longo said afterward, “I guess if you can walk away from an airplane crash, I guess you have to consider it a good landing.”
QND defeated Peoria Richwoods 2-0 to earn a spot in the single-class state tournament, then defeated Chicago Farragut in the semifinals. The Raiders lost in the semifinals to Libertyville but rebounded to defeat New Trier 2-1, coming from behind on two goals by Mackenzie.
John Prow led the team in scoring with 21 goals, and he was named all-sectional, all-state, all-regional and to the Parade All-America team. He played in four consecutive state tournaments. Midfielder Chris Mackenzie and goalkeeper Brian Anderson both were named to the all-state team.
Longo was the head coach, and Gary Allen was the assistant.
