Scholz is a 1970 graduate of Christian Brothers High School, where he earned 11 athletic letters in basketball, football and golf. After he was named an all-stater in his senior season, Scholz went on to play basketball at Jacksonville University, where he graduated from in 1974. He played on two teams that qualified for the NIT Tournament and one that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Jacksonville had reached the Final Four the season before Scholz was recruited.
Following graduation from Jacksonville, Scholz served as a graduate assistant under Lute Olson at the University of Iowa during the 1974-75 season. He then joined Cliff Ellis’ staff at South Alabama the next season, and from 1976-80, he was an assistant to Norm Stewart at the University of Missouri.
His initial head coaching assignment came in 1981-82 when he led Jackson (Mich.) Community College to a 24-6 record. He ended up coaching at Florida Southern College, where he led the Moccasins to seven NCAA Division II appearances. He was a four-time finalist for the Division II National Coach of the Year award.
He then coached with the NBA’s Orlando Magic from 1990-92 before taking the position at his alma mater, Jacksonville, for the 1994-95 season. He and his wife, Lynne, have two daughters, Corey and Brittany Lynne.
